How to Create a 3D Photo on Facebook

Facebook is always looking for unique ways to capture user attention. Recently Facebook rolled out an extension of its Facebook 360 photo capabilities. This extension, called the Facebook 3D photo option, allows users to upload 3D images to their News Feeds – with one caveat.

While this nifty new feature is eye catching and made everyone on the THAT Agency digital marketing team think up exciting new use cases, Facebook 3D photos aren't compatible with Facebook Business Pages  other than through the sharing of a post. (At least, at the time of this writing, our team hasn’t been able to recreate the 3D photo option for Facebook Business Pages.)

Did we say just one caveat? Well, we meant two. At present, to create a Facebook 3D photo, you need to have an iPhone 7 Plus or newer – essentially any phone that allows for the Portrait Mode. That means – sorry Android users, but this function doesn’t apply to you (yet)!

Despite these caveats, creating a Facebook 3D photo is simple. Here's how to do it:

  1. Take a photo using Portrait Mode on your iPhone 7 Plus or newer. Leave enough distance between you and the photo subject to create depth. The more defined the lines are between what is out of focus and what is in focus, the better!
  2. Open the Facebook App on your iPhone and search for the Facebook 360 Business Page. Like that page!
  3. Force close the Facebook App by double tapping your home button and swiping up on the Facebook screen.
  4. Reopen the Facebook App and create a new post. You should be able to scroll down and see the Facebook 3D Photo option.
  5. Select the desired photo and post. POW! You are a digital magician who just posted a Facebook 3D photo.

Facebook 3D photos are fun, cool ways to tell visual stories. We highly recommend giving this new feature a try! Plus, if the Facebook 3D photo option gains enough popularity, you can bet that Facebook will roll 3D photos out for digital marketing use on Facebook Business Pages.

Please remember that these technologies are always evolving and being tested. Currently, the Facebook 3D photo option might not be available for Facebook Business Pages (or at least we couldn’t replicate them there), but it gives us a nice idea of where Facebook is trying to go when it comes to taking its capabilities to the next level!
