Many people and businesses I come across are active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn without even thinking twice about it. But that’s often not the case when it comes to Google+.
Since its launch in 2011, Google+ has not exactly become the popular social network that Google imagined creating. With only a quarter of the amount of Facebook users, the New York Times recently referred to Google+ as a “ghost town” and I’ve heard many fellow marketers agree.
HOWEVER, although Google+ may not get as much buzz as other social networking sites, it certainly should not be overlooked. Here are some reasons why you should be on Google+.
Google+ has a large user base
With more than 540 million active monthly users, Google+ sees its user count increase every day. Forbes recently surveyed more than 60,000 American internet users, and 22% said they visited Google+ each month. This was the same amount who said they use Twitter, and more than the amount who use LinkedIn, Pinterest or Instagram.
Perhaps it’s not such a ghost town after all.

With Google Hangouts, brands can video chat with people anywhere in the world, host virtual meetings, or broadcast anything live. This gives small businesses the ability to reach out to clients, vendors, etc. at no cost. There’s also a sufficient amount of evidence which suggests that profiles that do well on Google+ get indexed quicker on Google (although they deny this). Additionally, when someone Google’s your businesses’ name, your Google+ business page often comes up as a search result. These are two strong reasons to establish a presence on Google+, and they also come in handy if you want to push a negative search result down to the second page.
It’s free, and you have nothing to lose!
My last reason that you should absolutely be using Google+ is because it’s there and it’s free. It’s relatively quick and easy to set up and use, so why not?
Whenever you post something to your Facebook wall or Twitter feed, it will only take you about 30 more seconds to post to Google+ as well (or even less time if you’re using Hoot Suite or Sprout Social). It’s an extra way to gain some extra exposure among Google+’s 540 million active users, and who doesn’t like an increased presence in the search engines?
